Dorothy May Thompson (nee Worden), age 105 of Des Moines, IA, was born to William Arthur and Fay Marie Worden (nee McBroom) on May 1, 1914 in Garden Grove, Iowa. She died Wednesday April 29, 2020 at the Trinity center in Des Moines, from Covid-19, just shy of her 106 birthday. Dorothy started her education at a little country school near Humeston, and then attended school at Garden Grove. She graduated from LeRoy HS, and then married Wayne Thompson on Aug 26, 1933. They were married 66 years. Dorothy worked on the family farm in Seymour 43 years, raised 4 children (Bill, Larry, Wanda, Jerry), cooked for the Seymour School district, and was employed at Nealy Mfg. from 1962-1980. She was renowned for her home made noodles and blue ribbon pies.
The curly red head was a faithful member of the Dale Baptist church for 20 years. She loved animals, children and the daily Jumble. Dorothy remained active throughout her later years, attending church, the 8-80 club, family trips, reunions, and entering lemon meringue pies in the state and county fairs and 4H fundraisers. Dorothy was a member of the Worden Family Association, and helped trace her roots back 10+ generations.
Dorothy is survived by her step brother Ivan Gehlhaar (Vonda) of Garden Grove IA, step sister Pauline Miller of Osceola IA, daughter Wanda Childers of Pueblo CO, four granddaughters, Valerie of St. Louis MO, Theresa Carter (fiancé Eric Esco) of Glendale AZ, Jeri Kay of Elkader IA, Doris Newport (Rodney) of Gold Coast, Australia, two great grandsons, Hunter and Maverick Thompson of Elkader, 2 step great granddaughters Sarah and Becky Schiffman, and many Worden, McBroom and Gehlhaar cousins, nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Wayne Thompson, sister Helen Worden, step brothers Max and Dean Gehlhaar, sons Billy Wayne, Larry Arthur and Jerry Kenneth (partner Jean Hosch), daughter in laws Charlotte Thompson and Kathy Kline, son in law George Childers, and grandson Brett Thompson.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, no service has been scheduled. Burial will be at the Cordon cemetery family plot in Corydon IA.
