George Larry Freeborn
George Larry Freeborn, age 83, of Centerville, Iowa, passed away Sunday, September 08, 2019 at the Golden Age Care Center.
Larry, as he was called, was born on September 11, 1935, the son of Guy Freeborn and Lelah (Brokaw) Freeborn. He graduated from Centerville High School in 1953. He served 24 years as a musician in the Air Force Band throughout Europe, Central America, South America, and the USA. Many of the concerts were attended by thousands of people. While being stationed in Germany, he met his future wife, Ingrid. They were married in 1958. They were blessed with three children.
After retirement in 1976, he moved his family to Hilltown, Iowa, where he spent many happy years. In 2003, he and Ingrid moved to Centerville.
He is greatly missed by his wife of 61 years, Ingrid; his daughter, Christine Ann Pozo of Centerville, his son, Vincent Larry Freeborn (Kristin) of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, and a daughter, Sonia Lynn Freeborn Gilligan (Mike) of Austin, Texas; granddaughters, Annemarie Johnson (L.J.) and Gabriela Pozo; a great granddaughter, Gemma Fox; his sister, Thelma Hess (Gary), a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ralph and Elke Randau; as well as three nieces and nephews.
For many years, Larry and Ingrid continued their passion for travelling in Europe and the USA. However, his greatest joy was spending time with his family. Playing in the Centerville Municipal Band for many years was the highlight of every summer for him. He also enjoyed playing in the praise band, and singing in the choir of the First Baptist Church in Centerville. He dearly loved his church family.
Now Larry is playing in the heavenly orchestra with his beloved granddaughter, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Freeborn. With his trombone, he is glorifying his Lord Jesus Christ. The multitude of heavenly beings are listening and rejoicing that a saint has come home.
Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30AM, Friday, October 11, 2019 at the First Baptist Church in Centerville with Pastor Dennis Higgins officiating. Military Rites will be provided following the service at the First Baptist Church in Centerville. Private burial will be held at a later date at the Hilltown Cemetery, south of Moulton. Memorials have been established to the Centerville Municipal Band in Larry's name, and may be dropped off or mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544. Ingrid, I am so sorry for your loss. It is never easy. I just lost my son a few months ago so I know what a loss does to ones' heart. It is left empty for awhile. May God give you comfort to fill you grieving heart. May the precious memories also fill you with comfort. Praying for you.

I met all the Freeborns the same day. Larry and Ingrid and their daughter Christine. Mother and daughter were out on the reservoir kayaking. Larry was sitting in wait for their return. I had taken to photography that summer (2014), and had my dog with me. I stopped to talk to him and sat and talked with him a good while until their return. I really only met him the one day, but I came away with a very distinct feeling of who the man was. I liked him very much. A good man who I thought of often, our chance encounter, and whenever I should happen to drive down their road. I regret I did not get the chance to know him better.

Love to his family, Ingrid and Christine who I know, especially. S
